I thought it was forever.

I knew it would be hard. Deployments, danger, separation. I thought distance would be our biggest obstacle.

It wasn't.

And I would rather he hate me than learn the truth.

But my lies were about to be aired for all to see. Because the past I tried so hard to forget is back and there was only one way I could survive.

I had to fight back.

Despite the risks I was drawn to him. More than anything I wanted a second chance, but I knew when he learned what happened to me nothing would stop him from trying to seek revenge.

Excerpt

“No, you’re right.” I swallow thickly. “We should put it behind us. Start over with a fresh slate.”

Jack smiles easily, the corners of his lips tipping up to reveal the killer dimple that I love so much. “Good,” he says. “That’s real good.”

“Right, good.” I try to return the smile, but I’m afraid it’s more of a weird facial tic than anything resembling an expression of grace and poise.

Chatter from the party catches my attention and I look back towards the gathering. “I’d better get back, then. I’m sure Livvie is going to need help with…something.”

“Yeah, I better get back, too. I appreciate this, Sof.” Then he does something that completely devastates my resolve to agree to his fresh slate proposal. He leans forward, puts a hand under my jaw, and brushes a kiss as soft as butterfly wings across the crest of my cheek. My hands come up to clasp at his biceps because if I didn’t I’d simply melt to a puddle at his feet. He pauses there for an eternity and there is magic in it. Magic that transports me back to a thousand other kisses like this. Magic that undoes every door I’d closed in my heart, blocking the feelings I’d had for him once upon a time.

We stay like that for a few beats past the line of propriety. I feel his fingers twitch on my jaw, like he wants to move, but can’t seem to make himself do it. In spite of everything, I find myself arching my neck to him automatically.

His swift inhalation breaks the moment and I catch myself. Shit.

I thought it was a weekend from hell, until he showed me a little piece of heaven.

Spending the weekend at a four-star resort was supposed to be a getaway from my hectic life. Sure, I was still technically working, but at least I could enjoy the sand and surf while I was at it.

That was until a run of bad weather threatened both my vacation and my job.

My last hope was a surly boat captain named Gabriel Rossi who looked like an angel. If only he didn’t have the temperament of a devil.

When the storm leaves us stranded until morning, it could only mean disaster…or desire.

I thought it was just one night with my brother’s best friend.

The boy I had dreamt about since he gave me my first kiss, under the lights of the Ferris wheel.

I knew he was about to leave for a year – no chance for a future.

But our one night together would create memories for a lifetime.

Our paths crossed again, but I had lied, and he was no longer the man he once was. He was warring against demons. Against the silence that was threatening to swallow him. And I had kept a secret from him, one he would never forgive me for.

But my secret was about to be ripped open. Displayed for the world on national news. And I had only one way to repair the damage.

I had to trust the man I lied to.

The man I never got the chance to make a life with.

The only man who could save what we had created together.

Nicole Blanchard lives in Florida with her daughter, and their menagerie of animals. She quit college to chase her own fairy tale that spanned the course of three continents and contained it’s fair share of dragons. Now, she owns her own business and pretends to be an adult.

She survives on a diet of too many books and substantial amounts of root beer and slim jims. When not reading, she’s lavishing attention on her family or inhaling every episode of Charmed and Sex in the City.
