My Review

Unlike her other books in this series, you really had no choice but to go into this one blind. So blind, we don’t even find out until a few chapters in who the potential love interest is. All we know is that at the end of the last book, Cain’s (Rider) brother Judah has assumed his position within the compound as Prophet and has him locked away. The book starts out very ominous and foreboding, and as with every other book in this series, doesn’t get much better from there. But that’s the thing with Tillie; she starts out throwing you for a loop and then provides headtrip after headtrip after headtrip throughout the rest of the story and you keep coming back for more because you simply can’t get enough. In fact, you beg her for it! Well, I do anyway. Just when I think she can’t possibly give me a character that makes me feel more than the ones before did, she goes and proves me wrong, and knocks me on my tail once more. If you thought you knew Rider from what we’ve seen in the other books, well, you’ll quickly come to find out you didn’t know him much at all. There were depths to this man I simply never saw coming and all it did was enable me to fall that much harder for him.

It’s so hard to really talk about anything pertaining to this story because Tillie drops one bomb after another, they all tie together, and not one of them can even be hinted at without spoiling the entire story for you. She has woven quite a tangled web and the best part is she even surprised me! Usually I can see twist and plot turns coming a mile away, but the doosie in this story I never even fathomed to be a possibility and I love that she pulled on over on me. It doesn’t happen very often in stories and just serves to make me treasure them all the more. Let’s just say that the theme of this story is not only loneliness, but that no one is who you think they are, whether that be their character or who they literally are as a person. The last 40% of the book was like zing, pew, zing, pew. Bombs being dropped everywhere. And just when you thought she was done, welp, there went another one. I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough!

As a character, we really got to the core of Rider in this book. And what I discovered, what brought tears to my eyes multiple times, was just how lonely he was and had always been. Imagine if the only person in your life, and I literally mean the only person you have ever really had in your presence, was manipulating you the entire time and was truly the devil in disguise. Imagine having only that person in your life, yet you are genuinely a good person and want to do right in the world. Imagine how much your world would be rocked when the veil came down and you saw all the awful truths that had been hiding in plain sight. Imagine learning everything you were fighting for was based off lies and half truths. Imagine how desolate that would make you as a person and how utterly alone you would be in this world. Then imagine finding the other beat to your heart, the other half to your soul, but knowing you needed to own up to your past transgressions and not believing you truly were worthy of them. To have your hopes and dreams touch your fingertips and then to have them literally ripped away. The last few chapters in this book brought me to my knees. I was openly crying. I was livid, SO full of anger at people I had grown to love. I saw where they were coming from yet I also saw a reasonable resolution. But to have everyone brought so low because of actions of others, to have them fighting against each other, for each other, just everything that transpired in those last few chapters. Whew, it makes me want to cry and rage about it again just thinking about it.

It will certainly be interesting to see where the next installment in this series goes. I “think” we are done with the crazy cult stuff, but who knows. If ever there was an author that could surprise me, Tillie is it. And I love ever depraved moment of it!
