My Review
Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series had been on my TBR for what seemed like forever, but with so many books in the series to read I just couldn’t find the time. That all changed a few months ago when I decided to binge read them all. I instantly fell head over heels in love with this complex Western family, the McKay’s. With 16 books and 4 novellas you are drawn into a world full of steamy alpha cowboys, the strong women who fall in love with them, and all the trials and tribulations that come with a family that large and with so much history. You would think after a few books things would start to get a bit repetitive, but not so the case with this series. While making my way through, I was most looking forward to reading Colt and Cam’s books, but then I read Gone Country. I finished that book and my heart was shattered. I kept telling myself, this can’t be the end of their story! I quickly forgot about the rest of the McKay’s and scoured the internet to see if we would in fact get the book I hoped for. So imagine my surprise when I saw that we would in fact be getting Boone and Sierra’s story. Then I just had to wait for it…
I can honestly say that Boone and Sierra were more than worth the wait! There was something so pure and epic about their connection that seemed to transcend time. We got a glimpse of Boone’s backstory when we met him in Gone Country, but it was nothing compared to what was revealed in Unbreak My Heart. And contrary to the title, when you receive it all, it will BREAK your heart. I found myself aching for him many times throughout the story. Sometimes in a steamy way, but mostly in a want to hurt people for him then wrap him in my arms kind of way. The struggles that he had to face throughout his childhood were substantial and never ending. Add in the fact that he came from such a large extended family, and it made it all the worse that no one seemed to notice. My heart was pure screaming for these people to just open their eyes and see what was going on in front of them. It was a testament to his character that despite all these obstacles, he thrived. It was beautifully heartbreaking. He didn’t just accept his fate, he made the most of it. He kept trying his best with what he had available and never took no for an answer. I don’t think I’ve ever read a more gorgeous character, inside and out.
Sierra was no longer the teenager we met in Gone Country, but then neither was Boone. They had both grown into young adults, ready to take on the world. But through all this time that passed, one thing never changed; their love for each other. Boone had always intended to come back when he felt he could offer her something. And I just wanted to scream at him that all she ever wanted was him! I understood his point of pride and needing to accomplish things to truly feel like a man worthy of her love, and I get that they both had a bunch of growing up to do, but it was so painful to read in the meantime. Them being separated from each other and fighting their inevitable feelings tore me up. But when they finally stopped fighting each other, or rather I should say when Sierra accepted her heart had always belonged to him, the chemistry was combustible. Nothing was more perfect and kismet than the two of them together, where they were always meant to be. It was as natural as if they had been together all their lives. There wasn’t anything awkward, they communicated beautifully, they loved endlessly, and I couldn’t get enough.
Many times when author’s have a popular series, then start breaking off for the next chapter, it falls flat. This book couldn’t be further from that if she tried. Eloquently told with a confort we’ve grown to love from her stories, it was the perfect blend of past and present to leave you wanting more. I loved that we got to get to know some of the other McKay cousins in this story. It definitely set up this new spin off series for future titles. I’m really hoping that Ky’s book is next because I’ve loved him since he was introduced in his father’s book. Needless to say, anything James releases involving McKay’s, you’d best believe I’ll be first in line!
